About us...

We are a 3rd generation ranch in Northeastern Lincoln County New Mexico located approximately 8 hours west of Stephenville TX.

The ranch is located in an area rich in history between Lincoln N.M. and Fort Sumner N.M. and it is known that many outlaws, lawmen and other historical figures traveled this area. The most well known are Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett, and John Chisum.

The ranch was started by Wade Hampton Corn (My Grandfather) in the late 1800's. He was one of 21 children in the family of Martin V. Corn who came from Kerrville TX in the mid 1800’s.

Granddad started the ranch when he was 9 years of age as a way to escape the farming lifestyle of his family. Borrowing $500.00 from a local bank, he purchased 1,300 head of sheep. Granddad herded them to the Capitan Mountains in the summer and to the Roswell Valley in the winter. The first year he paid the herd off and bought another 1,300 head. Granddad’s business grew quickly, ending up with 13 bands of 1,300 sheep, for a total of 16,900 head of sheep. Each band had its own sheep herder, and dogs. Granddads’ job was to keep each band supplied with food, provisions and to keep the schedules of shearing, weaning, and movement to the Capitan Mountains and to the Valley.

Soon the Taylor Grazing Act came into effect. From the Taylor Grazing Act came the Federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Fences started going up and the days of open range had come to an end. Granddad had to find a place that was going to work for all his bands to survive. He came upon a place known to us as the Adobe Well. There was an Adobe house built by a former homesteader, and a well with the best water around. Soon this was the headquarters of W.H. Corn Ranch. As time went on Granddad purchased land from the surrounding homesteaders. He would let them stay on the land until they chose to move on. The school house in the Ingram pasture that he built for the children of these families still stands. Some of the pastures today are named after the original settlers.

Today the Ranch is owned by Jeanine Grace Corn-Best it has been estimated at about 55,000 acres. There are 19 pastures. Largest consist of 5,896 acres the smallest is a holding trap 181 acres. (Pictures will show the terrain)  There are 11 wind mills two of which have solar jacks that pump with wind or sun. There are 27 water troughs with an extensive pipeline system connecting all water troughs and holding tanks at the windmills together. The Headquarters and the Camp are 11 miles apart with no electrical, phone lines in-between. Land free of these is few and far between.

This ranch is run by a foreman, his family and one hired man. There are approximately 2,000 head of sheep, 900 head of goats, 200 head of cattle, 20 Akbash/Pyrenees guard dogs, various barn yard animals, and 14 head of working horses, some in training.

The HQ compound has a main house that is the original house of W.H. Corn. It has 3 bedrooms, 1 bath, a kitchen and a living room with ranch history. There are two bunkhouses; the 1st has 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, and a place to put in a kitchenette. The 2nd has 2 bedrooms and needs a bath and kitchen added. The outbuildings are numerous and many are made from native stone and are in need of small repairs. Some of them could be re-organized for other uses. There is a 60 foot round pen with 6 foot angled sides. We have covered barns for portable stalls and plenty of land for expansion.

The Camp has 1 bunk house with a kitchen and bathroom and room to sleep 6. It also has covered barns for Portable Stalls, and guardrail corrals. There is more than enough room for round pens, portable barns and other housing.

Dear Jeanine,

We're back in Maine where we have lots of snow and the weather is cold. We already miss the beautiful blue sky, sunshine, and the wide open spaces.

We want to thank you for sharing your history and ranch with us. We had a wonderful time!
